Past:
  • First attempts to get fair trade started begun in the 1940s and 1950s
  • Were initiated by religious groups and various non-governmental organizations
  • In 1946 and 1949, the Mennonite Central Committee and SERRV International were the first groups to set up fair trade supply chains in developing countries
  • In 1994, a group known as the European Commission stated their support for strengthening Fair Trade in the North and South
  • In France during the year 2006, a law was passed which spawned a commission to recognize organizations on Fair Trade.

  • Popular in the United Kingdom
  • In the year 2011, over 1.2 million farmers and workers in more than 60 countries participated in International fairtrade system




Future:
  • The main goal of this movement is to get all of the world involved
  • The supporters hope to achieve this goal in the near future



Alternative Perspectives:
  • Some critics argue that Fair Trade harms those farmers who are not involved in the process.
  • Certain people think Fair Trade movement members put most of their focus on small producer groups
  • Instead, they could put more focus on advocating policy changes on trade which will have a much larger impact


The Fair Trade movement is highly beneficial for many different people across the globe. Its stated goal is to help producers in developing countries, while also giving a better life to farmers everywhere. It begun in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when it was attempted to start by non governmental organizations and religious groups. Today, it is most popular in the United Kingdom, but continues to recognize itself across the entire world. One of the main goals is to spread this process around the planet, and supporters of this movement hope to achieve this in the near future. However, critics believe this will not happen do to reasons such as Fair Trade members putting more of their focus on small producer groups, instead of larger advocacy policy changes which will more likely have a much larger impact. Overall, Fair Trade is a long lasting process that will keep striding for years to come.
